IAE NNC RK conducts research and technological work in the following areas:
Scientific and technical support work for the development of nuclear power engineering in Kazakhstan.
- definition of long-term strategy of development of nuclear energy in Kazakhstan;
- carrying out feasibility studies, feasibility studies development in support of nuclear power plant in Kazakhstan;
- experimental studies in support of safety of nuclear power facilities;
- design of nuclear facilities of the Republic of Kazakhstan;
- carrying out scientific and technical expertise of projects on construction of power plants and other construction projects of the nuclear industry;
- development of technical standards and regulations in the design and construction of nuclear plants;
- research within the development of innovative technologies in the nuclear field:
- research in the field of reactor material testing;
- research on development and security of nuclear technology for fast reactors and high-temperature gas-cooled reactors;
- research to support the use of atomic energy for industrial purposes, as well as the use of high-temperature heat of HTGR reactor for hydrogen production;
- participation in the work of the Kazakhstan material testing reactor KTM and experimental research in ensuring efficient operation of KTM.

Providing nuclear, radiation and industrial safety of the atomic industry objects
- Development and implementation of technologies for radioactive waste (RW) treatment, RW storage and processing, atomic industry enterprises and other Industrial branches;
- Providing nuclear, radiological and industrial safety of complexes of research reactors;
- Providing safe decommissioning of BN-350 reactor;
- Monitoring of nuclear and radiation situation at the objects of nuclear industry.
Environmental protection activities, including development and implementation of environmental projects
Providing nuclear science and industry with the qualified experts
